serious auto-update flaw with QuickBooks 2006 for Mac

Yesterday, I sent out an TechSplanations alert blast regarding a very serious issue with QuickBooks 2006 for Mac whereby the auto-update functionality of the application can delete the contents of your Desktop folder.

Thankfully, I have not heard from any of my San Diego clients who have encountered this problem. However, the very best information regarding what has happened and what you can do to protect yourself from data loss, is contained in a few knowledge base articles from Intuit:

The files from desktop are missing or unable to copy files to desktop after update (patch or release)

and, if you're concerned you may be affected by this issue, Intuit has set up a list where you can sign up to be notified about developments:

QuickBooks 2006 for Mac Desktop folder deletion issue

Also, QuickBooks 2007 for Mac is not subject to the deletion issue, but it too has some particularities that should be noted. According to Intuit:

For QuickBooks Pro for Mac 2007 only:

You may have experienced this issue but no data loss has occurred. Each time you attempted to update QuickBooks, a file was created.in the User folder. If you had attempted to update three times, you would have created three new files. Or if you had attempted to update four times, you would have four new files. These files were named in the following manner: Desktop1, Desktop12, Desktop123, Desktop1234, and so on. It is okay to delete these newly created files from the User folder.

Critical: Do not remove the folder named Desktop. Only remove the files that are named in manner shown above.
