Safari 4 released

Safari 4 has been released from beta status. An update to Safari 4 is available for Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows XP and Vista. The update addresses an incredible array of security concerns, and users of the Safari 4 Beta are urged to update from the beta software as soon as possible.

WWDC '09: new MacBook Pros, iPhone OS 3.0 & iPhone 3GS

During today's keynote address to the developers at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, Phil Schiller announced a full overhaul of the company's laptop offerings, improving performance and features with reduced prices. Also announced was the final timeline for Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" - the software will be available in September, and will be priced at $29 for current "Leopard" users, and a "Snow Leopard" Family Pack at $49 for home users with multiple Macs.

QuickTime, iTunes updated to patch security issues.

Apple today released QuickTime 7.6.2, patching a number of highly critical security vulnerabilities in the software. The update, which is available for Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X 10.5.7, Windows XP and Vista, addresses security concerns when opening files with malicious content.

Apple upgrades white MacBook

Apple today has announced a speed bump to their low end white MacBook model. The new MacBook has a faster 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of memory, 160GB of storage and the nVidia GeForce 9400M for fast video.

Highly critical Java vulnerability remains unpatched

A highly critical vulnerability exists in Sun's Java that can be easily exploited across all major platforms, including Mac OS X. The vulnerability, which has been known about since last summer by Sun, remains un-patched by Apple. The vulnerability is serious enough for some security organizations to recommend that Java be disabled in Mac OS X users' browsers, or enabled for trusted sites only.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 & Security Update 2009-002 released

Apple today released Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Security Update 2009-002. The update to Mac OS X 10.5 feature improvments to iCal, Mail, Parental Controls and the Printing system, along with a dozen or so minor general improvements.

Apple MacBook & MacBook Pro highly rated

Apple's new all aluminum-bodied MacBook and MacBook Pro systems have been rated at the top of each category of notebooks reviewed by Consumer Reports. An article at AppleInsider discussing the results of the ratings says the "report gives the Mac portables the lead in every size category, ranging from near-ultraportables up through desktop replacements.

Apple updates Xserve with the "Nehalem" Xeon processor

Apple today announced the immediate availability of the next generation of Xserve, featuring the "Nehalem" Xeon processors. According to Apple, the new Xserve features a single-die quad-core architecture, a fully shared 8MB L3 cache design, and a three-channel integrated memory controller with up to 12 slots of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC memory.

Safari bug gets Charlie Miller a Macbook Air

Security conference CanSecWest's 'Pwn2Own' contest, held this week in Vancouver, BC, once again featured security analyst Charlie Miller wasting no time in taking remote control of a fully patched Macbook Air. Miller took control of the Macbook Air by exploiting an as-yet unpublished vulnerability in Safari, giving the hacker complete control of Mac.

Apple updates desktop Macs, AirPort devices

Apple today announced upgrades across their desktop product line. The updated iMac, Mac Pro and Mac mini have improved graphics, faster processors and memory and no price increases. In fact, the 24" iMac is now starting at $1,499 - the former price of the high-spec'd 20" iMac. The new Mac Pro is packing Quad-core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processors and a redesigned interior space for easier expansion. The Mac mini now has the nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics processor, faster processors and more memory; it also uses about 45% less power.
